FILMING TIPS

Sometimes it takes more than a good video camera to make memorable videos. You can improve your filming a lot with just some tips.

Preparing for filming

Think ahead you can make a script before start filming (you can think about a story line). You can also plan a beginning and an ending.

Filming your event

Get close to your subject, you will get nicer shots when you get closer to your subject.
Use the zoom in or out very slowly.
Film close ups of the baby and siblings (if you are filming a birth announcement). The best shot to show who is in the video is a close up.
Use a variety of shots to create your story.
When recording your video move the camera very slowly. Turn off the auto focus if you camera has one.
Try to stay on a scene for around 8 seconds, which allows you to edit a scene down if necessary.
Try to take the time to frame your subject before you start filming.

Using a Tripod

Use a tripod to place your camera on or if you are holding the camera with your hand, try to find something steady to lean on, that helps avoid camera to shake. Hands usually shake. A simple tripod and inexpensive will work. The use of a tripod often makes a dramatic impact in the quality of the final video. If you move the camera during filming, you should move it very slowly and as smooth as you can.

Using an external microphone

Try to be aware of external noise. The sound is a very important part of the filming, sound is as necessary as the shots/filming for producing your final video. Be aware of the background sound. Using a microphone really helps get a better sound. There is wireless microphone quite cheaply that you can get.

Extra tapes and batteries

Make sure you have extra battery and tapes. It is always better to be prepare. Do not try to save money on tape, it is better to shoot a lot of scenes that you are not going to use then coming short of material to choose from. Label your tapes and write a description on the label, it will save you a lot of time when searching for specifics shots or scenes. And do not forget to set the write protect tabs on your tapes.

Light

Be sure there is enough light before shooting, if shouting indoors. Look for an angle that gives good lighting. When filming outdoors the sun generally provides enough lighting. Try to keep the sun to the right or left of the person filming.

Editing your video

Editing means putting together just the Film/shots that you need. You can remove shots that you do not need or you do not like (mistakes, bad filming, bad sound, words that you prefer not to hear, shots you wish you did not film, out of focus shots, etc.)
